National Eye Health Week

Opticians

This week highlights the importance of getting your eyes tested frequently and having the correct prescription glasses. Wearing the wrong glasses can cause just as much damage to your vision as not wearing them at all.

The Importance of Wearing the Right Prescription

It is necessary to have the right prescription. If you are experiencing side effects, it is likely a result of not having the correct glasses. Some side effects include blurred vision.

This is the most evident indicator that your eyes are struggling with the glasses you’re wearing. Blurred vision can affect your driving, everyday work, and lead to headaches.

Headaches are the next side effect. Eye strain is caused when the eye muscle is worn out and overworked trying to help you see better. When this happens too frequently it will turn into headaches, something that could have been avoided if you have the right glasses.

Eye Fatigue is also a cause of your eyes being overworked. Squinting to see better, straining to see something in the distance. The more you try and do with the incorrect prescription the worse your eyes will feel.

Eye Care Facts and Help

Our eyes contribute so much to our lives. So, we need to take care of them, like any other part of our body.

  • Around 2 million people are living with severe sight loss in the UK, which can significantly impact their daily activities.
  • A sight test easily detects the early signs of eye conditions such as glaucoma, which can be treated soon. During any sight test, other health conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, or cataract issues can be detected.
  • The optic nerve contains more than one million nerve cells.

Here’s what you can do to help:

If you get household chemicals in your eye, you need to wash it out as quickly and thoroughly as possible by flooding it with water.

When searching for sunglasses, look for the British Standards kitemark or CE mark. This means they offer a safe level of protection against harmful UV light.

If you get something in your eye it is important to try and not rub it, instead lift your upper eyelid over the bottom eyelashes which will cause tears to wash away whatever it was.
